detox day one



my new roots tarragon green bean salad for whole living


people always ask me how it feels to cut out grains and sugar. i thought i'd give you a play by play. keep in mind that i've been eating mostly this way for a year but have been off the wagon for a few weeks so your experience may be slightly different.

here is how my first day went:

for breakfast i had greek yogurt with my montana huckleberry jam (from my brother jake) and almond butter. i used a tiny amount of jam. i work on mondays and usually don't have a chance to eat until later in the day so i tend to grab a handful of nuts which tides me over. i definitely don't hold back when it comes to nuts. i eat a lot.

sunday night we made the green bean salad and bbq chicken because my beans were going bad. it rocked! seriously. loved it and it made for fabulous leftovers the next day. it was perfect to take to work. i ate it cold and it was heavenly. after lunch i wanted a little pick-me-up. i had a cup of english breakfast tea and it was perfect (albeit i was craving this).

after work i was feeling pretty beat and my dogs were barking not to mention that i got a friendly little visitor (if you know what i mean) leaving me feeling more exhausted than normal. i decided to skip my run and prop my feet up instead.

for dinner we made our favorite tacos which i put over baby kale and it was awesome! the black beans and guacamole were so satisfying. seriously great.

did i want a glass of wine? yes. did i have one? no.

ps this is a great recipe website i found via lovely morning. please feel free to share any great healthy recipes that you have and/or non-orthopedic comfortable cute shoe recommendations. thanks! i would love to create a support system here for anyone else attempting a lifestyle change.

  1. This kind of diet sounds interesting (and when I say diet, I mean way of eating, not weight-loss). I'm not sure I have the mental ability to cut out sugars completely though!

  2. I have a recommendation on the comfortable cute (non-orthopedic) shoe front. Granted, they are hit or miss, but some of their shoes are seriously cute -- Ecco. I have a cute pair of t-strap red heels from them that are ridiculously comfortable, and I have a pair of tall flat boots that I love. They're a little pricey but they're well made and have good support for your feet (which are irreplaceable).

  3. so I don't know if yo've noticed on my pinterest but I had to cut out dairy recently. I've been trying to change the way I eat (which I wanted to do back when you first did this on your blog, but I was pregnant and lacked self control!!!). anyway, b/c of the no dairy thing I have been exploring lots of awesome websites that are changing how I think about food! You have been an influence as well! Anwyay, my new favorite websites are: Oh she glows, my new roots (the green beans are from her, horray!), Roost, and chocolate-covered katie (this girl makes delicious treats using things like dates, beans, coconut, etc so they are actually healthy mostly!!!).   4. Mr. BEY and I have been "dieting" for a month now. We cut out all sugar and all processed foods. We have been making a diet of vegetables, fruits, lean meats, etc. (Every now and then I'll indulge in a piece of Ezekiel bread).

    We have done this type of life-change diet before and stuck to it for two years. Then we got engaged, wedding-planning stress kicked in and we fell off the wagon big time. We're trying to jump back into it head first and after reaching healthier weights, begin to incorporate more whole grains into the diet in moderation. (Moderation - that's the tricky, slippery slope).

    We've both lost around 15 lbs each so far. You'd never think you'd feel THIS GREAT after just one month. We can't wait to feel even better! Thanks for the continuous inspiration. XOXO

  6. Ugh, I got my "visitor" yesterday as well (on a Monday?? not fair!) and it just drains you. I'm sure you know 101 Cookbooks, which is a great website for delicious food. I don't use recipes often, though; I like to play around in the kitchen!

  7. Get it girl! Love a good detox. I'm with you on cutting out the coffee, and also on the red wine (after monday, our anniversary!).

    I am on my feet alllll day too, so I got a pair of compression sleeves. Sounds so old lady like, but it really helps. They go from just below the knee to the ankle, and there's no feet in them, so I can still wear cute shoes. I got them on Amazon. I love them! Keeps the blood from pooling in your feet which keeps your feet from hurting. ;)

  8. I love your little blog! Just came across it randomly and I'm so glad I did.

    I don't know if you've ever tried Campers before, but they are my go to shoe for when I have to be on my feet all day shooting a wedding. Some of their shoes are too ....earthy...for my taste but they also have some really cute ones!
