getting ready for my first 5k

i've been cataloguing my running progress through instagram. i'm on week 4 of my couch to 5k program. i'm using the c25k app. running a 5k was on my 30 before thirty and i never got around to it. luckily my friend christy has it on her list and we're going to do it together in january.

do you run? i would love to hear some tips on how you make time to run in the winter/ what gear you love. also, what is a gel pack?

have a great weekend!

  1. I do a little bit of running. Our "run in the winter" is probably different. Yesterday morning my running friend and I went out and it was 18 degrees - two pairs of pants, one l/s shirt, one l/s jacket, a windproof top layer, a hat, gloves, and a gaiter. That's what it took to run in that for me. I got a little warm during the run. I think the key to running when it's cold is to dress in layers. You can always take off or unzip something if you need to cool off.

    Good luck!!

  3. gel paks are great for longer races when you need something easy to consume/digest for quick energy while you're running.... my favorite is Gu over the PowerBar brands, and I prefer berry flavors over chocolate & coffee. Something about eating chocolate while running makes me a little sick. You won't need them for a 5K though, just make sure you hydrate before/after the race and grab a water cup at at least one of the water stands. you'll be great, you've been working so hard!!! and just don't start the race too fast .... that was my rookie mistake my first 5k and by the last mile I was hating myself. looking forward to hearing how it all goes! i bet you'll love it.

  7. Oh, I'm so excited for you. I did my first 5k back in March with David, and we had SO much fun! It was awesome! One of my runner friends told me that you can't really prepare yourself for the adrenaline of the actual race, and she was right! It was so great! You will become hooked, and then you will want to beat your time :) Good luck! Can't wait to hear about it! PS, I have no idea about gear, so I will check back to see what good information you get. I would love to hear about shoes!

  8. do you mean a gel pack like gu? it's gel energy- that you drink for long distance activities (biking, triathlons, etc). they're terrible, but helpful. you probably won't need one for a 5k. just a little water- which they should offer part of the way through. good luck w\ your 5k. my husband & i trained and ran 2 triathlons (sprints) this summer and then did our 1st 5k in october. we haven't ran since. it's too cold here in the winter (at least for me) to run outside.
