back from the woods

we returned home sunday from a weekend spent in one of my favorite places in the world: heflin. we left straight after work on friday and left our stressful lives behind. the weight of life is instantly lifted when you open up the gate to my grandparent's property and head down the gravel driveway to their beautiful home.

there is nothing like it.

we were greeted to a warm, yummy home cooked meal (even though grammy wasn't feeling all that well) and after we filled our bellies and chatted about our days we headed to bed. no noise but the sounds of the wind and the animals. amazing.

some highlights of our weekend included:
matilda's obsession with her new binoculars. see here.
catching the amtrack train within seconds of its arrival much to the delight of everyone.
dinner at garfrerick's cafe. absolutely delicious organic fare and incredible dessert (strawberry white chocolate bread pudding anyone?). a must if you're in oxford.
watching one of lynndaddy's favorite movies: the view from pompey's head.
getting to take in all of the beauty of the weekend and much needed family time.

ok, i need a few things... suggestions on how to introduce prayer to your child (warning: "now i lay me down to sleep" freaked me out as a kid) and book recommendations. i would love something inspirational. thank you in advance!

also, need to make some revisions. set myself up for failure. clearly walking guinness everyday is not going to happen (read: it's rainy and cold and you can't make me).

heflin.

sam's birthday wish every year is to spend the weekend in heflin, alabama with grammy and lynndaddy and the woods. he spends hours packing up all of his essential shooting equipment, throws his favorite tee shirts in a bag, and matilda and i just try and keep up. sam truly comes alive in heflin. the first day it rained and rained and he couldn't get easy, he needed to be outside. sunday he made up for it by spending just about every second there. grammy and i cooked and read while lynndaddy and sam spent their day in the meadow. matilda and guinness ran free. it was wonderful. i feel so recharged. no internet, no phone (except for a few text messages) and only the sounds of rain and gun fire...

matilda loved lynndaddy's walking stick so much that he made her her own...

see more of our trip here as well as more pictures of their beautiful home...

thank you so much lynndaddy and grammy! it was a perfect weekend.

Miss us?

Since I don't really like giving criminals the a-ok, hit us up, "we're out of town" notice, I don't usually advertise our trips. However, we spent a lovely long weekend in the woods and I would love to tell you about it, but I'm tired so pictures and highlights will have to do for now. I do love getting a few chastising notes when I'm absent. It makes me think someone reads this little blog.xo.

Matilda fully embraced her woodsy girl self. We're talking cargos and hats all weekend.

We got to test out this pack...finally!

There were so many wildflowers in bloom. Queen Anne's Lace and daisies galore.

Guinness needed three baths to get all of the jumpinginmudpuddleschasingblazerollinginthedirt debris off.

The days were spent in doors with coffee and wonderful conversation when it rained and when the sun peeked it's head Sam was out the door with Lynndaddy to tear up some targets. Grammy and I played with Matilda and sat outside in the cool breeze.

We also went to Grammy's wonderful weekly tea party. Her friends are fabulous! Made me want a weekly tea party of my own...

The last day was spent taking a dizzying drive to Cheahaw Park (the highest point in Alabama). Matilda was wearing an outfit deemed unsuitable for public view by Grammy (she was also the one who gave it to her. hehe.)

The weekend was absolute heaven as always. Thank you beyond words Lynndaddy and Grammy. We loved it!

ps bangs are superfun in humid conditions. forgot just how fun!

Matilda has found her voice

Matilda got her first taste of the gator this weekend. Oh, our babies grow up fast around here...

No babies were harmed in the filming of this video.

Anniversary number 4.

We celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary this weekend by escaping all of the noise, traffic, and our everyday hustle and bustle.

Thank you Christy

We headed to the woods. Our favorite escape, the second home of two of our favorite people: Grammy and Lynndaddy.

The smell of coffee flooded their artful home every morning, as well as the softest mountain light, gentlest breezes, and cheerful bird chirps.

It was a time for stories, recharging, overindulging in Grammy's delicious home cooking, and just being. It was a perfect way to cement the new year of marriage and to reflect on the last one.

*thank you Grammy and Lynndaddy for your unending hospitality and for just being you. we love you so.

Spotlight: Gail Anderson's Garden

One of Grammy's wonderful friends, Gail, invited us over to pick strawberries. I took the opportunity to document her beautiful home and garden. She has a front and back garden as well as a vegetable garden full of beautiful plants.

I love the arbor covered in roses.

I spy...

Country gardens are my favorite kind of garden

Gail's spirit house

A beautiful view of her vegetable garden

Gail travels all over the world, and is especially taken by Bali

I love Grammy so much!

Picking strawberries. I tried and didn't last too long
