Restaurant Review: Barkers Red Hots

Located on Windy Hill, Barkers Red Hots feels more like a trip to the Boardwalk. Bright blue umbrellas and twinkle lights welcome you and once you're inside it's a retro oasis of turquoise and bright green.

If you love hot dogs like I do, you will adore this nostalgic lunch spot (which is now open for dinner and on Saturdays). Mom and I went to Barkers yesterday to meet Rach for lunch and I was in heaven.

I had the Barker Original cooked over charcoal with horshradish mustard, but if you prefer the "city" steamed dogs they have those too! We also had the vinegar washed crinkle cut fries (yum) and I had the Crystal beach Loganberry juice which was fantastic!!

Click here for the full menu.

Owners Glenn and Vivian Robinson are actually old friends of my parents and they got in to the hot dog business in 1984 and had several hot dog stands all over Atlanta. They were actually the first licensed street vending operation in Atlanta. Their hot dogs are made by a fifth-generation family of hot dog makers.

Voted "Atlanta's Best Hot Dog" from Atlanta Magazine

Go get you a dog. They're amazing!

Oh holy craving

This could be the end of me...I just discovered Ritas frozen custard! It is like the yummiest treat I've ever had. They just opened one on Whitlock next to the Kroger and Gabriels.

Menu

I am so obsessed that I just made my brother Jake pick me up some. I also had it yesterday. I've only tried the gelati and I had it with Mango and Key Lime Pie. YUM!

Lewis Park

If you are looking for a great place to take you favorite four-legged friend, Lewis Park is a great choice. There is a huge run area and water fountain for humans and dogs. There are also picnic tables and benches for taking a load off. There is not a ton of shade, but hopefully there will be soon enough. The run is off-leash and there is always a great variety of breeds and owners. I love to go and dog watch. We went last night with Jessica and her Mom and their dog Patch and we had the best time. Best time to go is either early morning or around 7 when it is not so hot. Good for you and the dogs! A great fun and free activity for you and the pups!

Restaurant Review: Gabriels

If you live in Marietta, most likely you have heard of Gabriels. Owned by Johnnie Gabriel, the cousin of Paula Deen, this little bakery turned hotspot has what you're craving. When they made my wedding cake it was out of a tiny location, they have since moved to a much bigger space on Whitlock Ave next to Kroger. They offer breakfast everyday but Sunday and are open for lunch mon-sat, dinner tues-sat. They usually have free cookies that you can munch on while you wait in line and the lunch consists of delicious sandwiches on fresh baked bread and my pick, the vegetable plate. The desserts are out of this world. The cakes are a little pricey at $35 and up, but well worth it!

Jessie had the spinach salad, which she said was delicious and I had the chicken salad on focaccia, which came with chips. I love their chicken salad, but I glanced around at the vegetable plates and could tell I'd been out ordered.

If you haven't been you have to try it out. Definetly a place to run in to neighbors and old friends. I've never been without seeing someone I know and when there wasn't a line!

Restaurant review: Sam and Dave's BBQ 2 vs Williamson Bros BBQ

On a recommendation from a neighbor, Sam and I tried out Sam and Dave's BBQ 2 on saturday. To be fair I must forewarn you that I am a HUGE bbq fan and a picky one at that. Sam and Dave's is located off Whitlock in the old World's Gym parking lot. It is a bit sad now that the gym is a large vacant area and parking lot. Sam and Daves was bright and sunny with red and white tablecloths and a clean environment. There were the token plastic pigs and large bbq trophies adorned with golden pigs (just in case you forget what you're eating).

I ordered the jumbo (what?) pork sandwich and Sam got the platter which came with 2 sides, his choice: fries and baked beans. The bbq was pretty good. There was a lot of dark meat and the meat was chunky instead of shredded, adding for a messy and hard to eat sandwich. The sandwich did come on 2 large pieces of buttery texas toast which was a nice addition. Sam thought the beans were a little on the sweet side, but good nonetheless. One thing I liked was that there were two types of bbq sauce, one sweet one mild.

I would give Sam and Dave's a 3 out of 5 pigs.

update from my neighbor Erik:Lesley, Lesley, Lesley. I like the blog, I read it when I get the chance and I'm almost always entertained. I must disagree about the Bar-B-Que though. YOU GUYS DIDN'T EAT THE RIBS! Go back one more time, have the St.Louis Style with a side of mac'n'cheese, and maybe some fried okra and I guarantee at least 4 1/2 out of 5 pigs.

I will however recommend with 5 honkin' pigs Williamson Bros. BBQ. It has been a long time favorite and never dissapoints!
The atmosphere is down home and woodsy and the bbq cannot be beat. We met Grammy and Lynndaddy at their house and added my Aunt Kim and Uncle Alan to the caravan and headed over to Williamson Bros. My craving was born writing this review. I was a happy lady with my large pink lemonade, pork sandwich, and fries. Everyone loved what they got. The brunswick stew and onion straws are also a must. Bonus, you can also get their signature bbq sauce at your neighborhood Kroger or Whole Foods.

ps. the meat turner at Williamson Bros was so happy to pose for this picture!

Happy eating!

the wires, the wires, the wires are on fire!

So, last night when I was dog tired and watching Ricki Lake's documentary, The Business of Being Born (I'll come back to this) I saw and heard what looked like fireworks going off in the street. I'm like, "Sam, SAM!" We run outside to meet a bunch of scared neighbors and smoke and Logan tells us it was a transformer that blew up. Then Eric stumbles upon a bumper in the road.

turns out some idioso hit a telephone pole and ran. While we are discovering this another transformer blows, more neighbors come out. This is all at about 9:30pm. The next thing we know, the wires are sparking, telephone poles are on fire, and the entire marietta fire dept is on our street!

Christy tries to flag down the fire dept.

A wire down.

One of my favorite lines: You can't make this stuff up!

Spankopita?

Sam and I decided to go Greek this weekend. We visited one of our favorite hotspots, Nick's. Nick's is not a place you go to for atmosphere, a romantic date, or for a fine dining experience. It is however, hands down the best Greek food I've ever had. The menu has a wide variety from bar food to traditional greek, but they're known for their gyros, potatoes, and Nick's secret sauce! Sam threatens to steal the bottle of sauce perfection everytime we go. My personal favorite is the Fallafel Wrap, it's diced tomatoes, onions, and sprouts atop delicious fallafel inside the softest pita you could ask for and drenched in Nick's sauce, add the potatoes and you won't be sorry! Your best bet is to go on a pretty day and sit outside. Inside is smoky and sort of depressing. I fantasize about redecorating everytime I'm there. Nick's is located on Whitlock Avenue in a little house which is connected to the Back Porch, one of Marietta's favorite dives.
