rebuilding your temple: week seven

this week my dear friend dr. jennifer conway (you may remember her from here) led a fabulous class on "your path to wellness" with a focus on inflammation, toxins, and allergies.

jen's main focus is on nutritional response testing, which we were able to watch her test two different people which was really interesting. she determines what toxins are causing problems in your body with a series of measuring responses to different stimuli which are in viles. she has been able to help so many people change their lives by determining what they need to eliminate from their diet, as well as their environment.

we talked about some of the pioneers of healthy living like weston a price. he was a dentist who founded the research section of the american dental association which he served on from 1914-1928, he determined through his travels that people in different countries were getting cavities once the western diet was introduced.

we discussed standard process which is one of the oldest manufacturers of vitamins and supplements. they use all organic ingredients.

we also talked about the importance of getting good vitamins that are all natural. a lot of the vitamins that you find in big box stores and drug stores are synthetic.

aluminum is one of the biggest toxins and cause for several cancers. aluminum is most commonly found in deodorant which is applied right next to several lymph nodes. i have found that after switching to an all natural deodorant that i don't have any issues with body aroma (the word b.o. grosses me out) or sweating. hmmm. i love tom's of maine's lavender deodorant with the salt.

I switched to Tom's deodorant a while back, and I love it. Aluminum is also associated with Alzheimer's although it's not been proven that deodorant can cause the disease or anything. I figure it can't hurt to keep it out though!

i've lost 8 lbs since the beginning of the year by adopting healthy/natural choices for food!
would it be possible to get this class at trinity? and do you have any recommendations for refreshing your breath? i used to constantly chew orbit but know i shouldn't bc of the artificial sugars...(i love me some gum)

I really need to make some big changes. Maybe I can start with the Tom's deo...great suggestion. After Bridget posted about her pregnancy must haves, I read all the bottles in my bathroom and freaked.

re: geogirl
this is a tough one as most gum is artificially flavored. altoids are all natural, but the main ingredient is sugar. i'll be on the lookout.

re: wren
lots of salad! tonight i made turkey "tacos" which is a taco over salad. i make my own guacamole and put that on top. sooo good!

thanks wishful nals and snacktive!!

I'm really interested about changing deodorants, weird topic to comment about, but I'm glad you said which one you liked. I'll try it!

hmmm... i really need to figure this stuff out. i tried a week of eating "detox" and I really followed it closely but i gained weight. i think i might have eaten too many nuts and avocados. i know you're supposed to be able to eat until full and not count calories but something like that has to be responsible...

i also know it's not only about weight loss but it's a benefit I need right now.

Anyways- i'm just whining...this is something i should find a more wholistic doctor to talk to about..it's not your job i know. still love getting this info!!

I love Nourishing Traditions, its got a good 35 pages in the beginning of the why's and sources. Then 500 pages of recipes!! It was a LOT bigger than I expected! It is definately a go-to cookbook in our house! I almost suggested it in my last comment a few weeks ago, glad it turned up anyway. Definately worth the $$ in my opinion!

In case you are interested, there is a local farmer who delivers raw milk & cheese (plus he brings eggs & grassfed beef and pork) to Breadbeckers (another place you may be interested in) in Woodstock. GOOD STUFF. I will NEVER go back to "grocery store food". He labels it "for pet consumption" (which my husband finds appalling) to get around GA's rediculous laws.

Thanks again for the post, the info regarding inflamation couldnt have come at a better time as my mom is suffering from some chronic issues I believe to be related to poor eating causing inflammation. Its just amazing what the food God gave us can do!

Hope you and your family are doing well Leslie.

Great post Lesley - keep up the good work! @GeoGirl, most people that love gum give that up after some long talks about artificial sweeteners and chemicals - what is gum anyway? I recommend peppermint essential oil, young living is the only brand that I know of that that you can ingest. @wren, I have seen this before when people "clean up" their diets they gain weight. It might be that your body was hungry for nutrition or healthy fats, like you said. Keep it up and it should turn around. If it doesn't get a hold of me - there may be some underlying issues that need to be addressed??

Thanks Jennifer- i may send you a note sometime soon. definitely have committed to finding out what's going on. i'll def. keep the clean eating up though.
